NEWS AND NOTES:

I am writing to inform you of the death of my mother, Phyllis C. Nichols, yesterday (March 31, 2008).  She was the wife of A. Myron Nichols, who served in pastorate of the Pendleton Church from 1957 until sometime in the 1980's.   They continued to live in Pendleton and remain active in the church until 2001, when they moved east to be near my wife and me.

Mom was 91 years old and had been married to Dad for 67 years.  She was born and raised in California, and moved to Oregon in 1957 when Dad accepted the pastorate in Pendleton.  Interestingly enough, her father, Earle Piece Cochran, was the pastor of the Pendleton church prior to my father, although Mom was grown when her father came to Oregon.  Being a "PK" in her generation was a lot tougher than in mine, but the fishbowl was the same.

Best wishes,
Byron
(a note from Phyllis's son Byron Nichols to Roger Harwerth)

PILOT ROCK COMMUNITY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

OUT OF THE ASHES

On Friday January 25, 2008 Presbyterians from Boise Presbytery joined Presbyterians from Eastern Oregon Presbytery to stand beside the people of Pilot Rock Presbyterian Church.  The Pilot Rock church burned to the ground on Sunday November 11, 2007.  The event on January 25th was phase one of the recovery process.  We met first at the Tutuilla Presbyterian Church for lunch and a time of getting acquainted.  From Tutuilla we drove to Pilot Rock where we spent a little time in conversation with the people of Pilot Rock and then joined hands around the burned out hulk of the building for a time of prayer.

Our next stop was the Pilot Rock Community Center where we were led in worship by members of Eastern Oregon Presbytery (and a marvelous sermon by Boise CLP Debby Sandburgh).  Then in true Presbyterian fashion we ate a meal together.
